(1)Why don't we stutter in singing? This question is often asked. In fact, I've never heard that one could not sing because the word was blocked. People often recommended me to speak like singing when I stuttered. Why don't we stutter in singing? Some of the reasons I think of are: (1) There's no pause of breath in singing. One of the differences between reading a phrase as a poem and singing the same on as a song is that singing has no chopping in breath. Voice is automatically produced. Even when we sing with staccato, we can keep the breathing out evenly because we have to be conscious about the tempo. (2) A song has a framework of tempo. As you realize in singing a song, you'll have no fear of making the first sound in the next phrase after having a breath. This is because you can have time to be ready to produce the next sound within the tempo and the breath wil not get out of order by breathing air in oddly just before the utterance, which is one of the characteristics of those who stutter. For a stuttering person, the sound seems to be exact an individual HIRAGANA when speaking, while it seems to be like a bead and connected to each other with a thread when singing. While these two are major causes, there are some other causes. They are: (3) Speaking is for conveyance, while singing is not. So the person doesn't have to worry if he can make himself understood. This makes him feel easy. (4) Without any negative memory to have stuttered in the past, no tension is caused by the anticipation fear. These are the reasons I think of. When I was in Junior High School, we had a singing test at music class. Each of us had to sing in front of all the other class members. I thought I should fail in singing with stuttering. When the turn came to me, however, I was able to sing without any trouble. I remember feeling mysterious to myself. Chanting and rap music seem to be in between speaking and singing. Rap music, some of which are with tune and some others without it, has a lot of words in a fixed tempo and goes very quickly. In my opinion, stuttering will not appear in it just as singing because there's no space for stuttering in the stream of breath within the framework of tempo. As you already know, this idea is also taken into English study. This is a good way of practice, for it doesn't chop breaths. It would be a great help to connect this kind of mentality toward utterance with the practice in daily conversation. To top (2)Why don’t we stutter when speaking to ourselves and sharing reading with others. When I was having hard time in reading by myself at school, the teacher said to the class, "Let's read together." He stood right next to me, heard me read smoothly and said, "Oh, you can read well, can't you? Why then can't you read by yourself?" That was true. As long as I was reading with other students, my reading was perfect. The reasons are: (1) In case of reading alone, other students are listening to my reading. This causes me to worry about stuttering. This anxiety recalls some memories of failure in the past, makes the body hardened and holds the utterance. (2) In case of reading together, there's an easiness that others will not notice even when I stutter and the reading will go on independently of my failure. As a result of it, the stuttering doesn't occur. The factor to cause stuttering is responses from others. The speaker is affected by the reaction of others and the anxiety is yielded. Say, we are born and living in the world where we are 100% accepted on speaking, being too good to be true, there should be no stuttering person. If we were living in the world that nobody cares no matter how slowly, oddly, childishly and improperly we might speak even with a strange accent, nobody would have a chance to stutter. If stuttering occurs even when speaking to yourself, it might have been customized physically, that is, the tongue and the throat are overstrained and the neural circuit has been fixed in producing some certain sounds. Or the memory to have made a stuttering failure in the past might cause a conditional response. To top (3)The reason and prevention of recurrence after it was once thought to be cured. In the final stage of stuttering betterment, the person will rarely stutter in his daily life. Even when he has one, he will be able to control himself. And also when he feels the utterance anxiety arise, he can manage to have a stable talk in his own convincing way. At this stage, he will start to be free from stuttering by having various kinds of firsthand experiences such as speaking in front of people and telephone communication. And a lot of care for him is needed in this period. The triggers of the recurrence are: (1)Stress from the environmental change Changing schools, personnel transfer in the office, work increase, family problem, etc. These environmental changes seem to make some influence on speaking. The busyness with a proper amount of stress can work in a good way to free the person from the anxiety about stuttering. However we'd better avoid too much stress. To reduce stress, regular exercise such as swimming and jogging, nutritional balance and good sleep will be helpful (2) Difference in attention Paying good attention in the final stage, you'll make a big difference. ■In case you become careless of the way of speaking: As you feel almost no inconvenience in the course of the daily life, you pay no extra attention on the way of speaking or you have no practice. You gain confidence to some extent. But the more you become confident, the less you become conscious about controlling yourself. Before you realize, you'll go back to your old custom to stutter. ■In case you become too nervous and have growing of anxiety:: It is good to seek for the concrete way for the complete cure. However, as you are desperate, you tend to be overwhelmed when it doesn't work well and think, "I can't be cured." This causes furthermore anxiety and makes you seek for another way. You feel more and more pressed. As a result, you return to the former state. Those who get free from stuttering after the final stage are: The people who pay attention to the right breathing and the right posture and have regular practices of image-training and recitation in preparation for the public speech although they have no stuttering trouble in daily conversation. In my experience, this final stage took me relatively long. The reason was, even with a little bit of utterance anticipation anxiety, that I didn't feel inconvenience in my daily life and that I didn't pay attention to further improvement. This happened because other people rarely noticed it. I just left it as it was. However, when I was given chances to be an MC in front of the big audience, I was urged to be better. I started to practice by myself and tried to speak with a lot of attention. As a result of it, I was free from stuttering completely. The process for the improvement seems to be proceeded by putting the importance to the daily practice and having firsthand experiences. With the enough attention and the good environment, you'll be able to be free from stuttering. Or if you say that you want to be better to a certain level, you'll stay there. Though no one can tell if one who is in the final stage can reach the complete cure, I'd like to recommend him to keep paying attention for the natural way of speaking. To top (4) Accompanying actions and gestures Actions that occurs when speaking is blocked, such as stamping the floor, making a fist and shaking hands, are called accompanying action. Since my 20s, I've tried to refrain from them. However, in my teens, I couldn't help doing them. It doesn't mean I liked them. I just do them instantly to break through the condition that is held. This is something we intend to do, not something that comes out of unconsciousness. On the moment of the action, I can get a crack of a time for utterance. When it is customized, however, it tends to appear unconsciously and its effect will be less. We'd better not depend on accompanying actions. It doesn't necessarily mean that we should not move our body. When we try to speak in front of people standing straight, we feel tensed and tend to have more formal wordings. When we take a close look at excellent speeches of westerners, there are effective gestures. There might be more necessity of gestures because of an English characteristic that it has stronger accent than Japanese. Proper gestures can give a visual impact. Natural gestures such as facial expression, eyeshot, posture and hand motion make our speaking smooth and also give a good impression to the listener. We'd like to make good use of them. To top (5) Why is it difficult to speak slowly? Some stuttering people speak very fast. They finish a word or a phrase quite quickly and put a longer pause in between phrases. Listeners sometimes find it difficult to catch. Difficult to catch ⇒ Asked to tell it again ⇒ Tell it again quickly. This kind of circuit is made and sometimes it takes longer to make understood. The reason a stuttering person speaks fast is that he wants to finish conveyance quickly because of his utterance anxiety and also shorten the time the listener cares about his way of speaking in my opinion. Here occurs the difficulty to speak slowly. Comparing a healthy person and a stuttering person, there's a big difference in their psychology behind speaking quickly. In the quick speaking of a healthy person, there's no room in between phrases, that is, it goes fluently. He can verbalize whatever he thought of right away. O the other hand, when a stuttering person speaks quickly, he has a consciousness to find out what to say before verbalizing it, and then he bursts into speaking. It might be unfamiliar for a stuttering person to speak concentrating on thinking. Taking an example in a politician's way of speaking, Prime Minister Koizumi's is quick and clear. Its extreme opposite, we might say, is deceased Prime Minister Ohira. Some of you may remember his way of speaking. At the press interview, he went, "Ah, woo, as for that matter, ah---." I imagine that he was very careful which word to use. It made him speak that way. However, his halting way of speaking didn't give a bad image. Moreover, I think many people felt him faithful. If the stuttering person's posture is changed into the one that he can speak as his thinking goes along, then he can be greatly free from the capture of stuttering. The more good experiences he gets when speaking, the more he gets confident. Then it will reduce the anxiety. As a result of it, I think he feels he doesn't have to speak quickly and he can manage to speak as he brings his thoughts together. To top (6) The background of the good and bad form in speaking. Sometimes I feel I can speak in a good form for some time, and then suddenly I have some difficulties again. There might be a kind of cycle in stuttering just as we have a cycle in our physical condition. When I think of the background of it,--- Speaking form is disturbed: ■When we have busy days in working. The way of speaking gets rough unintentionally. We overstrain ourselves. The breath gets out of order. ■When we have a bad relationship in homes and work places. We get too nervous about the response from others. It reflects on the way of speaking. ■When we are working in an entertaining job with many occasions to meet people. If it's beyond our scope, we will accept it as a negative experience. ■When we have lost confidence because of the failure that is irrelevant to speaking. When we get tough demands from our boss. When the atmosphere of the workplace is tensed. ■When we are treated severely by the teacher if we are elementary school students. ■When our nerves are on edge, even though we physically get a good rest. In this condition, it is natural for us to feel uneasy about the way of speaking. ■When the nose get stuffed. Breathing is to be disturbed and we feel difficulty in speaking. In reverse, speaking form is stable: ■When you forget about stuttering in a good sense because of too much work. In this condition, we won't get self-reflective very easily. ■After we had a clutched experience. After giving a speech or presentation in front of people, we get free of tension, have relaxed bodies and minds and we can speak easily. ■When we have a good relationship in home and workplace, we don't have to be too careful and have rooms in our hearts. ■When we are getting successful experiences in speaking, or when we have confidence because of an experience that is irrelevant to speaking. This kind of confidence will reflect upon the way of speaking. I think the state of stuttering is affected by various things such as too much stress, high tension out of bad relationship, and changes of body condition. We can't change the outer environment completely. The key to being stable seems to be trying to control yourself well. To top (7) The difference of mind between when in recitation and when in conversation Both recitation and conversation have utterance. But the state of mind seems to be different. As a concrete step for stuttering betterment, establishing confidence through recitation practice is better than conversation practice. The reason is that we can keep a certain speaking speed and the pace is not to be disturbed easily. Though there might be a little difference between when others are following the lines and when not, I think, generally speaking, it is easier to be stable in recitation comparing to conversation. That being so, we can foster stable breathing, relaxed feeling in speaking through recitation practice. On the other hand, conversation can be affected by the other's speaking tempo. In case I speak slowly and the other speaks fast, conversation can be disturbed getting each other's direct response. The way of speaking gets forced and runaround. Besides, it doesn't have the medium of letters. It makes the speaker even pressed in conveying his thoughts. So we need to think of some ways, when we want to apply the stable feeling we've got in recitation to conversation. Role play that two people read the dialogue might be a great bridge to it. We can actually experience the stream of conversation this way. When I think back my own process to be free from stuttering, I find it was a great help to my skill and also to my mind. To top (8) Stuttering betterment and internal reform are the same. Diabetes, heart disease and cerebral hemorrhage used to be called diseases of adults. Now they are called lifestyle related diseases. As improper custom boosts the rate of these diseases, it is said to be important that we should live with a clear idea about healthy lifestyle including eating habit, exercise and rest and carry them out. We have such scenes that we feel, "If only I could say my name easily at the very beginning on the phone." "If I could say good morning easily at the morning meeting." "If only I could say numbers easily." Through my experience, however, I always had something annoying one after another even after solving one problem. Stuttering betterment is similar to internal reform. If you strongly hope to make a speech reform, you need to customize the way of speaking you practice in "Telephone Counseling & Lesson" when you talk with your family and close friends. When we speak with family or very close friends, we usually don't pay much attention on how to speak. But if you try to make use of these conversations with a lot of care, they will bring you a great confidence in speaking in workplace, on the phone and in front of people. (Can you pay good attention to your way of speaking even in marital quarrel? If you can, you are wonderful!!) To top (9) Telephone has nothing tough but not easy. Some people say that they feel easy to speak on the phone because they don't see the other's face. This sounds incredible for those who have stuttering problem. When I was an elementary school student, telephone became common in many houses. One day, it was brought to my house and put in the hallway. First, father called the noodle shop for the delivery service. I remember feeling very impressed. We didn't have to go to the shop and the noodle was delivered. However, I didn't have courage to use this machine. Even when I wanted to call one of my friends, I worried that I have to say my name right away when someone answered and then I have to ask if I could speak to my friend. My mind was completely halted when I think of it. Some people say they found their stuttering problem after growing up. I found the trigger for many of them was the telephone at the workplace. As the reasons that telephone at workplace is stressful: ■Telephone manner seminar in freshman training course We are taught that we represent the company to callers. We feel it is different from talking with friends and get tensed. We worry if we can speak well or we might make a mistake. ■The person on the phone is not known. Anytime, we answer the phone thinking it is from an important business client. If the call is about what you are not in charge, we are pressed we have to convey the important point clearly to the man in charge. ■Colleagues and supervisors are listening to his speaking on the phone. It's safe to say the biggest cause for psychological pressure is the responses from people around. When I had started working in an office, I remember calling my clients while all the coworkers were speaking on their phones. I had to worry more than other people. And it made the efficiency of my work worse. Even more, I got very tired. As you notice, talking on the telephone in workplace makes us feel that we are in between fires. Just for reference, I'll tell you the key to speaking well on the phone. That is: ■To quiver your vocal cord and make a long sound similar to "Uh" when you start speaking. This is not a clear sound as one in a word, but the sound generated when the air from lungs comes through vocal cord. You can make this sound just before you start a phrase. It goes like this, "Uh, may I speak to Mr. Tanabe?" This can be also applied to speech. It makes the utterance easier and also good for listeners. ■To make the first sound long when you start speaking. It is also effective. ■To move your upper body slightly and naturally instead of standing straight and stiff. If your body is stiff, your words are going to be also stiff. It will help a lot. ■To have imaginary rehearsals and actually practice saying necessary phrases with voice. In any case, it is the most important for you to keep the right way of speaking you have practiced in telephone lessons in every day life. To top (10) The reason we feel hard when conveying the specified information such as profile of a lecturer as MC though we can make a speech in front of people. Even though we have utterance anxiety, we can speak well in public in our own way. However, we feel difficulty in telling what is specified. The reason seems to be in not being able to change words. For instance, in a speech at the occasion like wedding, we can change words and use ones that are easy to come out though we get nervous. When we introduce someone's personal history, however, words cannot be changed. And it's hard for a stuttering person to say. To have confidence in speaking, you need to write down what you want to say in the beginning. Then I recommend you to memorize and vocalize them. It is not always true, but at least when you already know what you speak, you should practice in advance. Changing of words is just a countermeasure. It is not harmful. However, when you speak 10 words without changing, you'll get more confident than when you speak 1,000 words with changing them into different words. To top
